In today's relatable Homily, the celebrant, Father John Carmichael, reflects on the constant battle between "righteousness" and "charity", humorously sharing a personal moment of yielding to his "worst part" in a parking lot. He emphasizes that the challenge is to surrender our control and "surrender our flesh to the Lord", choosing to see the world through the "vision of God".
The Scriptures offer the ultimate remedy for this struggle:
The First Reading from Romans 8:12-17 reminds us that we are "not debtors to the flesh". If we live by the Spirit, we put to death the deeds of the body and "will live". We have received the "spirit of adoption" through which we cry, "Abba, Father".
The Holy Gospel according to Luke (13:10-17) tells the powerful story of Jesus healing a woman "crippled by a spirit" on the Sabbath. Jesus rebukes the indignant synagogue leader's hypocrisy, asking if a "daughter of Abraham" should not be set free on the Sabbath, humiliating His adversaries and causing the whole crowd to rejoice.
Be encouraged to invite the Holy Spirit inside of you to overcome sin and live out the spirit of adoption.
