In this illuminating Homily, Father Milik draws a vital lesson from Jesus's parable, warning against the inner "three-year-old in all of us" who insists, "I can do it by myself". He highlights that the Pharisee, for all his good works, was trying to "save himself", leaving "no need for God in this man's faith". The tax collector, by contrast, "knew it" and came to God to receive the mercy he was in great need of.
The powerful Sunday readings make a clear case for the grace of humility:
The First Reading from the Book of Sirach (35:12-14, 16-18) proclaims that the "Lord is a God of justice who knows no favorites," and that "The prayer of the lowly pierces the clouds".
The Second Reading from 2 Timothy 4:6-8, 16-18 echoes this theme, as St. Paul, humbly approaching his end, awaits the "crown of righteousness" from the Lord, the just judge.
The Holy Gospel according to Luke (18:9-14) tells the famous Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector, concluding: "whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted".
Embrace the beautiful realization of Pope Francis: "I am a sinner whom the Lord looked upon with mercy". Only by recognizing our need for God can we open our hearts to the gift of His mercy.
