Byzantine Saints: Repose of Saint Cyril, Equal of the Apostles & Teacher of the Slavs (14 February)

On February 14, the Church commemorates the repose of St. Cyril, Equal to the Apostles, the great missionary and teacher of the Slavs.
Born Constantine in Thessalonica, St. Cyril received the finest education in Constantinople and became a priest, librarian of the Cathedral Church, and professor of philosophy. A brilliant defender of the faith, he refuted iconoclast heretics and engaged in debates with Muslims before embracing missionary work alongside his brother, St. Methodius.
In 857, the holy brothers were sent to preach to the Khazars. Later, at the request of Prince Rostislav of Moravia, they undertook their greatest mission: preaching the Gospel in the Slavic language. By divine inspiration, St. Cyril compiled the Slavonic alphabet and translated the Holy Scriptures and liturgical texts—bringing the light of Christ to entire nations.
Summoned to Rome, they were received with honor by Pope Adrian II. Shortly thereafter, weakened by labor and illness, St. Cyril reposed in 869 at only 42 years old, entrusting the continuation of the mission to his brother.
St. Cyril was buried in the Church of St. Clement in Rome, where his relics remain.
Through their labors, whole peoples entered the Church. For this, the Church calls them Equal to the Apostles.
