Saint of the Day for September 17: St. Hildegardis (Hildegard of Bingen), virgin and abbess. Born in 1098 in the County of Sponheim on the Rhine, she was educated from age eight at the monastery of St. Disibod (Disibodenberg) under Jutta. Moved by the emptiness of worldly honors, she embraced a life wholly given to God. Favored with heavenly visions, she was known for deep humility, mortification, and devotion—the true marks of sanctity beyond extraordinary gifts.

As abbess, she lived as one continually in God’s presence while serving her community with gentleness and care. When her sisters grew too numerous for the hermitage, she relocated the community to Mount St. Rupert (Rupertsberg) near Bingen. She wrote the lives of St. Rupert and St. Disibod and corresponded with Popes Eugenius III, Anastasius IV, Adrian IV, and Alexander III, as well as Emperors Conrad III and Frederick I. She died on September 17, 1179, at about 82 years of age.
