On September 17, the Church commemorates the Holy Martyr Agatha Clea (Agathocleia/Agathokleia). A humble servant in the home of the Christian Nicholas, she endured years of savage abuse from her pagan mistress Paulina—beatings, forced barefoot walks on sharp stones, even the breaking of a rib and the cutting out of her tongue. Yet nothing could shake her confession of Christ.

Imprisoned and starved for her faith, she was miraculously sustained—birds brought her food each day—until Paulina, in a final act of rage, murdered the saint. Today we honor Saint Agatha Clea’s steadfast courage and her unshakable love for the Lord.
