As part of our series on the foundations of beauty, we're discussing Edmund Burke's important treatise on beauty: "A Philosophical Enquiry into the Sublime and Beautiful." While this book is mostly known for its explanation of beauty and the sublime, the section on taste is what interested me the most. Burke believes that senses and judgments, and therefore taste, are basically the same in every person, but that judgments (which lead to taste) can either be cultivated or corrupted. This truth sheds light on our present circumstances of cultural programming to acclimate our tastes away from beauty, truth, and goodness toward ugliness, lies, and evil.
