Were Joseph and Mary terrible parents? If the "brothers of Jesus" were Mary's biological children, that's where the argument leads. Former Protestant pastor Kenny Burchard grants the Protestant reading for the sake of argument and follows it through 18 biblical texts: six or seven children raised in the holiest home in Israel who don't believe in Jesus (John 7:5), siblings unnamed when Mary stands at the cross, and a dying Jesus entrusting his mother to John instead of a brother (John 19:25-27). Even Protestant commentators like Albert Barnes and Matthew Henry say Mary lived with John for the rest of her life, and not one records the brothers taking her home. So either Mary is the least successful mother in Scripture, or adelphos doesn't mean what our friends insist it means. Luther, Calvin, and Zwingli read it our way.
