“Forgive everyone for everything.”

This Byzantine Catholic homily connects the Transfiguration of Christ with one of the most difficult transformations required in the Christian life: overcoming resentment and learning to forgive.

The Transfiguration reveals that Christians are called to become more and more like Christ, sharing in His divine light. But remembering wrongs, holding grudges, and refusing forgiveness can descend upon the soul like darkness, transforming us in the opposite direction.

Christ gives us the way out: forgive from the depths of the heart.

The homily reflects on the unforgiving servant and reminds us that because God continually offers mercy to us, we are commanded to extend that same gift to others.

We also hear the remarkable example of St. Doulas of Egypt, who endured years of mockery, humiliation, and abuse. Through repentance, humility, and prayer, his suffering became a path toward Christlike forgiveness.

Forgiveness does not mean that hurt or anger instantly disappears. It can include appropriate boundaries. What matters is refusing to desire another person’s destruction and instead praying for their salvation.
