“Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.” — St. Jerome

On the feast of St. Jerome, Priest, Confessor, and Doctor of the Church, this sermon examines the extraordinary life of one of the greatest biblical scholars in Catholic history.
Born in the fourth century, Jerome mastered Latin and Greek, embraced an austere life in the Syrian desert, studied Hebrew, became a priest, and eventually served Pope St. Damasus I, who entrusted him with the monumental task of producing a reliable Latin translation of Sacred Scripture.

That work became known as the Latin Vulgate, which would exercise an enormous influence upon Western Christianity. The sermon compares the Vulgate to an anchor resting on the ocean floor, keeping the ship of the Church from drifting.

But Jerome was far more than a translator.

He entered the great doctrinal controversies of his age and defended Catholic teaching concerning grace, the saints and their relics, and especially the perpetual virginity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Against Helvidius, Jerome defended the Church's understanding of the “brothers” of Jesus and Our Lady's perpetual virginity.

Jerome was also famously fiery. He could be abrupt, argumentative, impatient, overbearing, and extraordinarily stubborn. Yet this difficult man became a saint.

That may be one of the most encouraging lessons of his life.

We do not have to begin as perfect people to become saints. We must become humble, recognize our weaknesses, cooperate with God's grace, and continue fighting for holiness.
St. Jerome reminds Catholics to become little in our own eyes, to love the Word of God, and to read Sacred Scripture—not merely to accumulate knowledge, but to know and love Jesus Christ.
