“He that exalteth himself shall be humbled; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.”

What does Catholic humility really mean? This homily explains why humility, although not greater than faith, hope, or charity, is the indispensable soil in which every other virtue grows.

The word humility comes from the Latin humus, meaning soil or earth. A flower’s beauty could never exist without the ordinary dirt beneath it. In the same way, charity, hope, faith, and every Christian virtue require humility to take root and flourish within the soul.

Saint Teresa of Ávila provides a beautifully simple definition: “Humility is truth.” God is our Creator, and we are His creatures. His will is our true good, joy, and happiness. When we place God’s will before our own, we humble ourselves and allow Him to exalt us.

Humility does not mean denying our talents. It means cultivating the gifts God has given us and allowing them to shine—without boasting—as Our Lady acknowledged in the Magnificat: “He that is mighty hath done great things to me.”

True humility also frees us from the fear of failure, which often comes from worrying about what others will think. Finally, humility enables us to accept the crosses God sends without complaint, praying with Christ: “Thy will be done.”

Unless we become like little children, we shall not enter the Kingdom of Heaven.
