The Holy Martyr Themistocles of Myra in Lycia is commemorated by the Orthodox Church on December 21. He lived during the brutal persecution of Christians under the Roman Emperor Decius (249–251 AD).

Saint Themistocles was a shepherd by trade and a faithful servant of Christ. During the persecution, he hid a Christian named Dioscorides in his home, protecting him from arrest. When soldiers searched for Christians, Themistocles courageously presented himself to the pursuers instead, refusing to betray his fellow believer.

He was cruelly tortured for his confession of faith in Jesus Christ. Remaining steadfast unto death, Saint Themistocles received the martyr’s crown in the year 251 AD, glorifying God through his sacrifice.

His life reminds us of Christ’s words:

“Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.” (John 15:13)
