St. Edburge, Virgin (21 December): Butler's Lives of the Saints

On December 21, Butler’s Lives of the Saints commemorates St. Edburga (Edberg) of Winchester, a royal virgin and daughter of King Edward the Elder of England.
From her earliest years, St. Edburga despised all worldly riches and chose Christ over earthly honor. When her father placed royal ornaments before her on one side and a penitential religious habit on the other, the young princess joyfully chose the habit—dedicating her life entirely to God.
She was entrusted to the nunnery of St. Mary at Winchester, under the care of Abbess Ethelreda, where she later became a nun and served God with great fervor and humility. After her holy death by fever, her relics were venerated with great devotion, enclosed in rich shrines of gold and silver.
Portions of her sacred remains were later transferred to Pershore Abbey in Worcestershire, becoming its most treasured possession, while her principal relics continued to be venerated at St. Mary’s in Winchester.
This reading preserves the Catholic tradition of sanctity, royal humility, and virginity offered entirely to God—faithfully transmitted through Butler’s classical hagiography.
