Pope St. Eugene I, also known as Eugenius I, is honored by the Catholic Church on June 2. A Roman educated in the service of the Church, he became pope during one of the most turbulent periods in Christian history.

Following the exile of Pope St. Martin I, Eugene was chosen to lead the Church amid intense pressure from Emperor Constans II and the controversy surrounding Monothelitism. Though some believed he was favored by the emperor, Pope Eugene quickly demonstrated his unwavering fidelity to Catholic doctrine.

When a letter from the Patriarch of Constantinople containing ambiguous theological language was presented in Rome, the clergy and faithful strongly opposed any compromise with error. Pope Eugene stood firm, refusing imperial demands and defending the orthodox faith handed down by the Apostles.

Despite the dangers faced by his predecessor, Pope St. Eugene I remained steadfast in protecting the Church from doctrinal confusion. He is also remembered for welcoming the young St. Wilfrid during his pilgrimage to Rome.
