Saint Proculus the Soldier (1 June): Butler's Lives of the Saints

St. Proculus the Soldier is one of the most ancient and beloved saints of Bologna. According to tradition, he was an officer in the Roman army who courageously professed his faith in Jesus Christ during the fierce persecutions of the early Church. Around the year 304, he suffered martyrdom for refusing to abandon Christ.
The ancient devotion to St. Proculus spread throughout Italy, and he became the principal patron saint of Bologna. Later, another holy man bearing the same name, Bishop Proculus of Bologna, also suffered martyrdom for the Catholic Faith under the Gothic king Totila in the sixth century.
In this episode of The Lives of the Saints by Father Alban Butler, we explore the remarkable stories of these two saints, their relics, the growth of their cult, and the establishment of their feast day on June 1st.
