Archbishop Viganò has released a new essay, The Capital Schism, presenting his analysis of the crisis of authority in the Catholic Church. Viganò argues that generations of deficient post-conciliar formation have produced bishops, and even popes, who no longer adequately understand or transmit the Catholic faith. He draws a provocative distinction between the papacy as a divinely instituted office and contemporary popes who, he argues, act contrary to that office through doctrinal errors, synodality, globalism, environmentalism, and support for LGBT causes.

Viganò argues that the SSPX's resistance is justified when obedience to ecclesiastical authorities would require abandoning the perennial Catholic faith. The essay culminates in an apocalyptic warning: the great apostasy preceding the Antichrist could involve a pope acting against the papacy itself. Viganò calls Catholics to defend the papacy, Christ's kingship, and the traditional faith against what he describes as a false synodal conception of authority. The crisis is not political; it is spiritual. And the stakes could not be higher. The faithful must choose: defend the office or submit to the men who have abandoned it.
