Cardinal Cupich has reinstated Father Michael Pfleger—a priest with a history of abuse allegations and theological claims that critics describe as deeply troubling. Videos surfaced showing Pfleger allegedly presenting himself as possessing a unique intimacy with God, suggesting he does not need priests, the Pope, or Church authorities, and claiming a form of spiritual power derived from Christ's resurrection that he intends to wield for social justice. Researcher Michael Hichborn brought the videos to wider attention.
Hichborn also highlights serious liturgical and doctrinal concerns: Eucharistic prayers involving pita bread and wine served in unconventional vessels, along with Pfleger's support for women priests, bishops, and cardinals. The material was previously brought to Church authorities, resulting in Pfleger being called to a meeting and issuing an apology—but Hichborn characterizes the response as inadequate.
The contrast is stark: traditional Latin Mass communities face restrictions while Pfleger—with five abuse allegations and public heresy—remains in ministry.
