St. Quadratus, Bishop of Athens (26 May): Butler's Lives of the Saints

On May 26th, the Church honors Saint Quadratus of Athens, one of the great Apostolic Fathers of the early Church. A disciple of the Apostles themselves, St. Quadratus inherited their spirit, zeal, and miraculous gifts, becoming a courageous defender of Christianity during the persecutions under Emperor Hadrian.
According to Eusebius and Saint Jerome, St. Quadratus was renowned for his holiness, prophecy, miracles, and learning. After the martyrdom of Saint Publius, successor of Saint Dionysius the Areopagite, Quadratus became Bishop of Athens and strengthened the faithful who had been scattered by persecution.
During the reign of Emperor Hadrian, St. Quadratus boldly presented an apology for the Christian faith, defending the truth of Christ against pagan accusations. His work helped calm a violent persecution and became one of the earliest known Christian apologies addressed to a Roman emperor.
