Venerable Confessor John Psychaitis is commemorated on May 26th. Living during the reign of Emperor Leo V in the early 9th century, this holy monk became one of the fearless defenders of the sacred icons during the height of the Iconoclast persecution.
After forsaking the world and entering the monastic life near Constantinople, St. John devoted himself to fasting, prayer, asceticism, and spiritual warfare. Through his holiness, God granted him the gifts of healing diseases and casting out demons.
When the Iconoclast heresy spread throughout the empire, St. John boldly refused to renounce the veneration of holy icons. Instead, he openly condemned Emperor Leo the Armenian as a heretic. Because of his unwavering confession of the Orthodox Faith, he endured repeated arrests, interrogations, exiles, and persecutions.
Yet after every exile, St. John returned even stronger—defending the holy images of Christ and strengthening the faithful with extraordinary courage and spiritual authority. His life remains a powerful witness to steadfastness in the truth and unwavering devotion to Christ and His Church.
