In this episode of The Lives of the Saints by Father Alvin, we reflect on the life, faith, and martyrdom of Blessed Ambrose Edward Barlow, a Benedictine monk who lived during the persecution of Catholics in England.

Born in 1585, Edward Barlow was the son of Sir Alexander Barlow of Manchester. After years of formation, he joined the Benedictine Order, taking the name Ambrose. Despite imprisonment and persecution, Father Ambrose devoted his life to ministering to Catholics in Lancashire, especially in the parish of Leigh, where he was remembered for his humility, wit, and piety.

In 1641, during renewed persecution under King Charles I, Father Ambrose was arrested while preaching on Easter Day, tried, and condemned to death for being a Catholic priest. He was hanged, drawn, and quartered on September 10, 1641, becoming one of England’s Benedictine martyrs.

Today, his relics are venerated at Wardley Hall (Salford Diocese) and Stanbrook Abbey. His memory lives on as a shining witness of faith, humility, and perseverance.
