Saint Gertrude of Nivelles was a noblewoman who chose Christ over worldly power. Born in 626, the daughter of Pepin of Landen, mayor of the palace to the Frankish kings, she grew up in a household of virtue and holiness. When pressured to marry, the young Gertrude boldly declared before King Dagobert that she had already chosen Christ as her spouse.

Guided by Saint Amand and supported by her mother, Blessed Itta, Gertrude helped establish a great monastery at Nivelles in Brabant. At only twenty years old she was appointed abbess and governed the monastery with remarkable prudence, humility, and charity.

Saint Gertrude embraced holy poverty, devoted herself to prayer and meditation, and became renowned for her wisdom and virtue. At the age of thirty she resigned her abbacy and spent her final years preparing her soul for eternity.

She died on March 17, 659, and her feast has long been celebrated throughout Brabant and the Low Countries.

This reading is taken from The Lives of the Saints by Father Alban Butler, one of the most respected traditional Catholic collections of saintly biographies.
