On March 17, the Church commemorates St. Marinus the Martyr, a courageous Christian who boldly confessed Christ during a time of persecution.

According to the Byzantine Synaxarion, St. Marinus lived during a period when pagan worship was widespread and Christians were violently persecuted. Filled with zeal for the true God, he saw pagans offering sacrifices to false idols and destroyed their altar, trampling their idols underfoot while proclaiming himself a Christian.

For this bold confession of faith, he was arrested and subjected to brutal tortures. The persecutors beat him with whips, suspended him, and raked his sides with iron claws. They even knocked out his teeth with stones and dragged him by his hair across the ground.

Despite these tortures, St. Marinus remained steadfast in his faith in Jesus Christ.

Finally, after enduring many sufferings, the local ruler ordered that the holy martyr be beheaded with the sword, sealing his witness to Christ with his blood.

Although the exact time and place of his martyrdom are unknown, the Church remembers St. Marinus as a heroic example of Christian courage, zeal for truth, and unwavering fidelity to Christ.

His life reminds us that the saints were willing to suffer everything rather than deny the true God.
