Our Lord's healing of the man afflicted with dropsy provides a powerful image for understanding sins of impurity: the more the afflicted man drank, the thirstier he became. So too, sinful desires promise satisfaction while often creating an even greater hunger.
Drawing upon St. Jerome, St. Augustine, St. Lawrence Justinian, St. John Damascene, St. Gregory of Nyssa, Sacred Scripture, and other Catholic spiritual authorities, this sermon examines why sins against chastity can become habitual and why they can darken the understanding and weaken our resistance to temptation.
But the message is not despair. The sermon concludes with the remedies available to every Christian who sincerely desires freedom: prayer and flight from dangerous occasions of sin.
Our Lord Himself commands us: βWatch ye and pray that ye enter not into temptation.β
No matter how many times someone has struggled, the answer is not to surrender to sin. Turn again to God, seek His grace, make a sincere confession, avoid the occasions that lead back into sin, and pray for the virtue of chastity.
Prayer is the safeguard of chastity.
π Please pray for everyone struggling against temptations of the flesh.
