St. Nikephoros the Confessor, Patriarch of Constantinople, is commemorated by the Church on June 2. A faithful defender of the holy icons during one of the most turbulent periods in Church history, St. Nikephoros stood courageously against the heresy of iconoclasm and suffered exile for the truth of the Orthodox Faith.

Originally a dignitary at the court of Empress Irene, St. Nikephoros later embraced the monastic life and became renowned for his holiness and wisdom. In 806, he was elevated to the Patriarchal Throne of Constantinople, where he became a zealous champion of the veneration of holy icons.

When the iconoclast Emperor Leo V the Armenian revived persecution against the defenders of icons, St. Nikephoros refused to compromise the teachings of the Church. As a result, he was deposed and exiled in 815 to Proconnesus, where he spent the remainder of his life in prayer, confession, and steadfast witness to the Orthodox Faith.

St. Nikephoros reposed in the Lord in exile, leaving behind important writings defending the sacred icons and preserving the apostolic tradition of the Church. In 846, after the triumph of Orthodoxy over iconoclasm, his holy relics were solemnly returned to Constantinople. They were placed in the magnificent Hagia Sophia before being enshrined in the Church of the Holy Apostles.
