Who were the forgotten women of the Catholic literary revival?
In this clip, Bonnie Lander Johnson discusses the remarkable women writers who helped shape twentieth-century Catholic literature, but whose work has largely fallen out of print and out of the historical record.
While writers such as Graham Greene, Evelyn Waugh and G.K. Chesterton are widely remembered, Bonnie explains how the Catholic literary revival was also sustained by a remarkable generation of women writers. Their novels explored faith through the ordinary realities of family life, parish life, schools, convents, marriage, work and the moral choices of everyday people.
Bonnie discusses writers including Josephine Ward, Carol Houselander, Sheila Kaye-Smith, Antonia White, Muriel Spark and other Catholic women whose work offers a distinctive insight into what it meant to live the Catholic faith in the modern world.
For Bonnie, Catholic fiction does something that theological writing alone cannot: it allows us to encounter the faith through the lives, struggles, relationships and moral questions of other human beings.
