What did Britain lose at the Reformation?
Bonnie Lander Johnson explores the transformation of medieval Catholic Britain and argues that the Reformation changed far more than religious belief. It transformed the way people understood land, property, community, work, nature and everyday life.
Before the Reformation, much of ordinary life was shaped by the Catholic Church, monasteries, the agricultural calendar and the commons. Monasteries were not simply places of prayer: they could be centres of education, healthcare, food production and charity, deeply connected to the communities around them.
Bonnie explains how the dissolution of the monasteries and the growth of private property began to sever these relationships. Land that had once been understood through custom, memory and shared rights increasingly became something that could be measured, divided, bought and sold.
The result was a profound transformation of the Catholic landscape and of the way ordinary people related to the land around them.
