On January 16, the Church commemorates the Holy Martyrs Speusippus, Eleusippus, and Meleusippus, triplet brothers who suffered for Christ during the 2nd century persecution under Emperor Marcus Aurelius (161–180 AD).

According to ancient tradition, these saints suffered in Gaul, though some accounts place their martyrdom in Cappadocia. Their holy grandmother Saint Leonilla, baptized in her old age by a disciple of Saint Polycarp of Smyrna, converted her three grandsons to Christianity.

Filled with zeal for the Lord, the holy brothers destroyed idols and boldly rebuked pagan worship. Arrested and tortured, they were hanged, scourged, and thrown into fire, yet their bodies remained unharmed by the flames. After witnessing the martyrdom of her grandsons, Saint Leonilla herself was beheaded for Christ.

Also martyred were:

Saint Janilla, who confessed Christ after witnessing their steadfast faith

Saint Neon, who recorded their sufferings and died from brutal beatings

Saint Turbo, who copied the account and was later martyred

These holy martyrs are especially venerated in Spain, where many churches are dedicated in their honor. Their sacred relics were later given by Byzantine Emperor Zeno to a French nobleman from the city of Langres, where they now rest.
