“Have patience with me, and I will pay you back everything.”
In the Gospel of the unforgiving servant, Christ describes a man owing 10,000 talents — an enormous debt representing roughly 60 million days of labor. The point is unmistakable: he could never repay it.
Yet the king does not merely give him more time. He forgives the entire debt.
This is an image of God’s mercy toward us. Our sins create a debt we cannot repay by our own strength, yet through the Cross and Resurrection of Jesus Christ, that debt is forgiven and communion with God is restored.
But the forgiven servant then refuses mercy to another man who owes him only 100 denarii.
The Gospel therefore confronts us with a serious question:
Can God’s mercy truly transform a heart that deliberately refuses to show mercy?
This homily also addresses those carrying deep wounds. Forgiveness does not mean pretending nothing happened, calling evil acceptable, immediately restoring broken trust, or erasing trauma through willpower.
Forgiveness is often a process.
It can begin simply with the desire to forgive — and with praying by name for the person who hurt us, even when we do not feel like doing so.
Through prayer, Confession, the Holy Eucharist, and the grace of the Holy Spirit, Christ the Divine Physician can gradually transform resentment into mercy.
🙏 Lord, forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.
