Saint Rosalia of Palermo, affectionately known as “La Santuzza”—the Little Saint—abandoned nobility, wealth, and worldly comfort to live entirely for Jesus Christ. Centuries after her hidden life and death, the discovery of her relics became associated with Palermo’s miraculous deliverance from a devastating plague.

Born in Palermo, Sicily, Rosalia was traditionally identified as the daughter of Sinibald, Lord of Quisquina and Roses, whose family claimed descent from Charlemagne. While still young, Rosalia rejected worldly vanity and withdrew to a cave on Mount Quisquina near Bivona.

She later moved to a grotto on Mount Pellegrino, overlooking Palermo. There she offered her heart completely to God through prayer, manual labor, solitude, and austere penance. Her hidden life was characterized by a continual union of her soul with God.

An inscription traditionally attributed to Rosalia was discovered in the cave on Mount Quisquina:

“I, Rosalia, daughter of Sinibald, Lord of Quisquina and Roses, have decided to live in this cave for the love of my Lord Jesus Christ.”

Different religious communities later associated Rosalia with their traditions. The Benedictines claimed that she had belonged to their order, while Greek religious communities in Sicily also preserved traditions connecting her with Byzantine monastic life.

In 1624, a terrible plague devastated Palermo. According to tradition, Saint Rosalia appeared to a suffering victim and revealed where her remains could be found. Excavations on Mount Pellegrino uncovered bones believed to be hers.

The sacred remains were placed in a reliquary and carried solemnly through the streets of Palermo. Following the procession, the plague subsided. In gratitude, the people acclaimed Saint Rosalia as the patroness of Palermo, and devotion to “La Santuzza” spread throughout Sicily.

Pope Urban VIII inserted her name into the Roman Martyrology. Saint Rosalia is commemorated on September 4, while July 15 recalls the discovery of her relics.

Her life reminds us that no existence devoted entirely to God is ever wasted. Though hidden from the world during her lifetime, Saint Rosalia became a powerful intercessor for an entire city centuries after her death.
