Everything we possess—our life, health, family, Catholic faith, time, talents, and financial resources—is a gift entrusted to us by God. What kind of fruit are we returning to Him?
In the Parable of the Wicked Tenants, the tenants gradually forget that the vineyard belongs to someone else. They begin treating its produce as their personal possession and reject every servant sent by its rightful owner. Finally, they kill the owner’s son in an attempt to seize his inheritance.
Although Christ originally directed this warning toward the religious leaders who rejected God’s messengers, the parable also holds a mirror before us. How easily do we say, “This is my money, my talent, and my free time”? Like the tenants, we can forget that we are stewards—not absolute owners—of God’s gifts.
This Byzantine Catholic homily challenges us to examine how we use our time, abilities, and material resources. Are we praying, serving the lonely, helping those in need, and placing our talents at the service of God’s Kingdom?
Christ is the cornerstone upon which our entire lives must be aligned. At the Divine Liturgy, we offer God bread and wine—gifts we first received from Him—and He returns something infinitely greater: the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ.
Let us offer God the vineyard of our hearts and become faithful stewards who bear abundant fruit for His Kingdom.
