In today's reading from The Lives of the Saints by Father Alban Butler, we reflect on the life of St. Benedict Crispus of Milan, whose feast day is celebrated on March 11.

Very little historical information survives about this holy bishop, yet what we do know reveals a man deeply committed to the defense of the Church. As Archbishop of Milan, St. Benedict Crispus traveled to Rome to ardently defend the episcopal rights of his see. Though he ultimately lost his case, his determination demonstrates the seriousness with which early bishops guarded the authority and dignity of their dioceses.

St. Benedict Crispus is also remembered for composing the epitaph of the young Anglo-Saxon prince Kwala, who was buried at St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. This detail shows the cultural and spiritual connections between early medieval Europe and the Church in Rome.

Although history records only a few fragments of his life, the witness of St. Benedict Crispus of Milan reminds us that many holy servants of the Church carried out their duties faithfully without widespread recognition.

The Roman Martyrology commemorates him among the saints of the Church on March 11.

May the example of St. Benedict Crispus inspire us to remain faithful in defending the truth and dignity of the Church entrusted to us.
