St. Codratus of Nicomedia is one of the heroic martyrs of the early Church whose faith remained unshaken even under brutal Roman persecution. According to the ancient account recorded in Fr. Alban Butler’s Lives of the Saints, Codratus was born to Greek Christian parents in Corinth. When persecution arose, his mother fled into the desert where the young saint was raised under miraculous circumstances.

Tradition holds that the child grew up nourished by Heaven itself, and the clothes his mother placed on him before her death mysteriously grew with him. Later, Codratus became a physician and teacher, gathering disciples who lived holy lives as anchorites.

During the persecutions under the Roman emperors Decius and Valerian, the prefect Jason arrested Codratus and his companions. Instead of defending himself, the saint boldly proclaimed the story of salvation—from the creation of the world to the death and resurrection of Christ.

Despite terrible tortures and attempts to force them to sacrifice to pagan gods, Codratus and his disciples remained steadfast in the faith. When they were thrown to wild beasts, the animals refused to harm them. Finally, they were led outside the city and crowned with martyrdom by beheading.

The companions who suffered with him were:

• St. Dionysius
• St. Anectus
• St. Paul
• St. Crescent
• St. Cyprian (Saen)

Their witness stands as a powerful reminder of the courage of the early Christians and the strength that comes from fidelity to Christ.

Saint Codratus and his companions are commemorated on March 10 in the Roman Martyrology.

May their example inspire us to remain faithful in times of trial.
