Drawing from Sacred Scripture, St. Bernard, St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Teresa of Ávila, and the example of King Philip II of Spain, this sermon reflects on the emptiness of riches, honors, pleasures, and worldly success when they become substitutes for God.

The soul was created for eternity. Every earthly pleasure eventually fades, but the treasures laid up in Heaven endure forever.

"Lay up for yourselves treasures in Heaven, where neither rust nor moth doth consume."
