Byzantine Saints: Saint Peter the Wonderworker, Bishop of Argos (3 May)

St. Peter the Wonderworker, Bishop of Argos, is commemorated on May 3rd in the Orthodox Church. Living in the 9th and early 10th centuries, he was raised by devout parents and came from a deeply spiritual family—his parents and brothers all embraced the monastic life.
Known for his humility, St. Peter initially refused the episcopal office, considering himself unworthy. Instead, his brother Paul was consecrated bishop of Corinth, and St. Peter lived in silence and ascetic struggle beside him. However, after persistent pleas from the people of Argos, he finally accepted the call to become their bishop.
As a shepherd, St. Peter demonstrated extraordinary compassion and love. He cared deeply for orphans and widows, fed the hungry during times of famine, and through his prayers, food miraculously did not run out. He ransomed captives, healed the sick, and was granted the gift of spiritual insight.
Before his repose, St. Peter foretold the day of his death and peacefully departed to the Lord at the age of 70. His holy relics, later transferred to Nafplio in 1421, became a source of miracles, exuding myrrh and bringing healing to the faithful.
