Catholic apologists love to say "the Church Fathers refute Protestantism," but too often that means recycling the same handful of mined quotes, so instead of quote-mining, I read the entire surviving corpus of one obscure 4th-century Father, St. Pacian of Barcelona, front to back. What I found was a bishop whose writings against the Novatian heresy quietly vindicate a whole range of distinctly Catholic doctrines: the authority of bishops to forgive sins, confirmation as a sacrament, the necessity of valid ordination, the "Catholic name" argument, the Church's visible unity and necessity for salvation, and an infusion-based view of justification. This is the deep-dive case that a single, barely known Church Father lands blow after blow against the core of Protestant theology.
