Over 20 years ago, Raymond Arroyo helped lay the groundwork for moving Venerable Fulton J. Sheen’s cause for canonization, and the story behind it is deeply personal. When Raymond was a young reporter dating a non-Catholic woman, a priest handed him a box of Fulton Sheen’s cassette tapes for converts and told him to “make a deal” with Sheen at St. Patrick’s Cathedral.
Raymond promised that if Fulton Sheen helped bring Rebecca into the Catholic Church, he would do everything he could to get Sheen back on television. Years later at EWTN, a documentary Raymond worked on impressed the rights holder so much that he granted EWTN permission to air Fulton Sheen’s show every week after The World Over—fulfilling that promise in a powerful way.
Both men kept their word, and that grace-filled exchange is why Fulton Sheen holds such a special place in Raymond Arroyo’s heart to this day.
