The Scriptures highlight the consequences of infidelity and the promise of life through the Cross:
-The First Reading (Numbers 21:4-9): With their patience worn out by the journey, the children of Israel complain against God and Moses, despising the "wretched food" of the manna. After seraph serpents bite the people, they repent, and the Lord instructs Moses to make a bronze serpent and mount it on a pole. Anyone who is bitten and looks upon the bronze serpent survives.
-The Responsorial Psalm (Ps 102): A plea for divine attention: "O Lord, hear my prayer, and let my cry come to you".
-The Holy Gospel (John 8:21-30): Jesus warns the Pharisees that they will die in their sins if they do not believe that "I AM". He proclaims that only when they have "lifted up the Son of Man" will they realize His true identity and His perfect union with the Father. As He speaks these words, many come to believe in Him.

May we always be worthy to approach these heavenly gifts as we continue our Lenten pilgrimage toward the Paschal Mystery.
