Byzantine Saints: Venerable Moses the Hungarian of the Kiev Near Caves (26 July)

St. Moses the Hungarian (Moses of the Kiev Caves) endured captivity, torture, humiliation, and unimaginable suffering rather than betray Christ or surrender his vow of purity. Born in Hungary and serving the holy Prince Boris, Moses survived political upheaval only to become a prisoner in Poland. There, a wealthy widow attempted to force him into marriage through wealth, seduction, and horrific torture.
Despite daily beatings, starvation, and even mutilation, St. Moses remained steadfast, choosing the eternal riches of Christ over every earthly pleasure. After finally reaching the Monastery of the Kiev Caves, he spent the remainder of his life in prayer, asceticism, and helping others overcome temptations of the flesh through God's grace.
His remarkable witness reminds Christians that true freedom is found not in satisfying every desire, but in complete surrender to Jesus Christ.
