The 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina brings back painful memories for survivors and puts new attention on the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), now facing cuts under the Trump administration. The president wants states to take over many of those responsibilities. Former FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell highlights lessons learned from Katrina, including the need for strong federal coordination. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem defends the administration’s approach, saying long-term disaster mitigation should not be something the federal government is involved in to the extent it has been in the past. Meanwhile, several FEMA employees were placed on leave after signing a letter to Congress warning about recent changes. In June, President Trump announced plans to phase out FEMA after the current hurricane season.
