Byzantine Saints: Martyr Barbarus the Soldier, and those with him, in Morea (6 May)

On May 6th, the Holy Orthodox Church commemorates the holy martyrs Barbarus the Soldier, Bacchus, Calamacus, and Dionysius, who courageously confessed Christ during the reign of Julian the Apostate in the 4th century.
Saint Barbarus was a soldier in the Roman army who secretly practiced Christianity while serving under the pagan emperor Julian. After defeating a mighty Frankish warrior in single combat, Barbarus received great honor and was elevated to the rank of imperial bodyguard. But when ordered to offer sacrifice to the pagan gods, he openly confessed Jesus Christ instead.
For his faith, Saint Barbarus endured horrific tortures. His body was torn apart, yet an angel of God miraculously healed him before the eyes of all. Witnessing this miracle, the commander Bacchus and the soldiers Calamacus and Dionysius immediately believed in Christ and rejected pagan worship. They were swiftly beheaded for their confession.
Saint Barbarus continued to endure unbearable sufferings for seven days. Though tortured by wheel, fire, and tormentors covered him with oil, the grace of God preserved him unharmed. Many pagans converted after witnessing these miracles. Finally, Saint Barbarus received the crown of martyrdom through beheading in the year 362.
The relics of the holy martyr were buried by the pious Bishop Philikios in the city of Methone in the Peloponnese.
May the steadfast courage of these holy martyrs inspire us to remain faithful to Christ no matter the trials of this world.
