Frank Wright challenges the Vatican's presentation of mass migration as principally a question of human dignity and human rights. Cardinal Robert Sarah has warned against using Scripture to justify mass migration, and he argues that Pope Leo XIV has drawn a false moral equivalence between opposition to mass migration or support for national borders and support for abortion. The two are not the same. One is a prudential policy question. The other is the killing of the innocent.
Frank argues that contemporary mass migration should be understood as a lucrative industry involving organized people-smuggling networks, governments, NGOs, and employers benefiting from migrant labor. He points to recent events in Britain, Anthony Rubin's investigation of European migration, and claims concerning criminal networks supplying boats and transporting migrants into Europe. Taxpayer and charitable money ultimately supports a system benefiting NGOs and what he calls the "liberal internationalist order", while supplying Western economies with inexpensive labor and consumers.
The Vatican frames it as human dignity. The evidence suggests it is a business. And the social consequences, for migrants, for host nations, and for the poor left behind, are ignored. The question is whether Catholics will accept the Vatican's framing or demand the truth. The answer may determine the future of the West.
