Ahead of Pope Leo XIV's planned visit to Peru, Peruvian canon lawyer Msgr. Ricardo Coronado-Arrascue joins John-Henry Westen to discuss the controversy surrounding Pachamama and indigenous religious practices. Coronado describes Pachamama as rooted in pre-Christian Andean religion and argues that a modern "indigenous theology" has attempted to elevate indigenous culture alongside the Gospel, producing religious syncretism.

Asked whether Pope Leo might participate in a Pachamama-related ceremony during his visit, Coronado says he does not expect that to happen. Leo is careful about his public presentation, even as he advances controversial policies through appointments and other figures. He won't do Pachamama. He'll let others do it.

The interview turns to allegations surrounding Pope Leo's handling, while Bishop Robert Prevost, of an abuse case involving a Peruvian priest. Coronado alleges that Prevost failed to pursue an adequate canonical trial and discusses a new book that he says reveals connections among the accused priest, Prevost, and a cleric who later became Prevost's secretary. Coronado emphasizes a crucial canonical distinction between dismissal from the clerical state and a dispensation, arguing that the latter allowed the underlying allegations to avoid the scrutiny of a trial. These are serious contested allegations presented by Coronado, not independently established findings.

The question is whether the truth will emerge before the visit—or whether it will be buried beneath the pageantry. The allegations are serious. The Pope is coming. And the faithful deserve answers.
