Catholic Priest Publicly Apologizes: “We Abandoned You” (During Covid)

Fr. Muñoz Fita publicly asks forgiveness for what happened during the pandemic—and for leaving the faithful without the Eucharist when they needed the Church most.

“I ask for forgiveness for having left you without the Eucharist for many weeks last year.”

In this powerful homily, the priest reflects on the enormous responsibility of the priesthood. A priest does not merely represent himself when he enters the world. In a real and visible way, he represents the Catholic Church to the people entrusted to him.

He then turns to one of the most painful periods in recent Catholic history: the weeks and months when many Catholics were unable to receive the Holy Eucharist during the pandemic.

His words are striking.

He acknowledges that many of the faithful turned to their spiritual fathers for the Bread of Life during one of the most frightening and uncertain moments of their lives—and instead found themselves separated from the sacraments.

“We failed you.”

“We abandoned you when we should have been closest to you.”

But his apology goes even further.

The priest admits that what happened continues to weigh upon his conscience, and he makes a remarkable personal promise: if obedience were ever to place him in a similar situation again, he would refuse to become responsible for repeating what he now considers one of the most shameful acts of his life.

And what can the Church learn from what happened during the pandemic?

For Catholics, the Eucharist is not simply another part of parish life. It is the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus Christ—the Bread of Life and the source and summit of the Christian life.

May this testimony lead us not toward bitterness, but toward repentance, greater love for the Holy Eucharist, deeper appreciation for faithful priests, and renewed confidence in Jesus Christ.
