Discover the courageous martyrdom of St. Liberatus, Abbot, and his six companion monks, remembered by Father Alban Butler on August 17.
During the persecution of Catholics under Huneric, the Arian Vandal king of North Africa, seven monks were summoned from their monastery near Capsa to Carthage: Liberatus, Boniface, Servus, Rusticus, Rogatus, Septimus, and Maximus.
Their persecutors first offered them wealth and promises if they would abandon the Catholic faith.
Their answer was simple:
“One faith, one Lord, and one baptism.”
They were chained, imprisoned, and tortured. Yet Christians continued visiting their dungeon to receive instruction and encourage one another to suffer faithfully for Christ.
Finally, the seven monks were condemned to be burned aboard an old ship at sea.
The vessel was filled with dry wood. The martyrs were bound upon it.
The fire was lit.
But again and again, the flames went out.
Unable to burn them, their persecutors killed the martyrs with oars and cast their bodies into the sea. The bodies were carried back to shore and honorably buried by the faithful. Butler dates their martyrdom to 483.
Their witness reminds us that Christian unity is not merely sentimental. These monks chose imprisonment, torture, and death rather than surrender the Faith.
St. Liberatus and holy companions, pray for us.
