Bishop Strickland explains how the Netherlands now permits euthanasia for terminally ill children aged 1 to 12. Belgium has its own requirements for euthanasia among minors. Canada allows waiving final consent in certain circumstances. And U.S. jurisdictions exist without statutory gestational limits on abortion. Bishop Strickland presents a Catholic defense of the sanctity of human life, challenging the growing acceptance of euthanasia and abortion as expressions of compassion, personal autonomy, or medical choice.
The central argument: human dignity does not depend on age, health, independence, or perceived quality of life. "A government can change a law, but it cannot change the moral nature of an act." Drawing on Scripture and papal teaching, including Pope Pius XI, Pope Pius XII, and Pope John Paul II, Strickland argues that the duty to protect vulnerable people extends from the unborn child to the terminally ill, disabled, and elderly. He distinguishes euthanasia from refusing disproportionately burdensome treatment and from properly administered pain relief. Accepting the limits of medicine does not mean abandoning a patient.
Opposition to abortion and euthanasia must be accompanied by practical support for struggling parents, exhausted caregivers, and families facing severe illness. Strickland calls for prayer, lawful civic action, pastoral care, repentance, and concrete works of mercy. Defending life requires both moral conviction and personal compassion. No person should have to earn the right to live by being healthy, independent, or free from suffering. The law may change. The truth does not. And the Church must defend it, with clarity and with love.
