Why do liberal governments increasingly regard traditional Christianity as a threat to their political and ideological authority? Following his previous report on a leaked British counter-extremism document, Frank Wright argues that liberalism functions as a competing belief system, one whose promises of progress, equality, and social liberation have produced moral decline, social disorder, and widespread disillusionment. Catholic teaching offers a fundamentally different understanding of reality, justice, and human nature, making Christianity an ideological challenge to the modern liberal state.
Frank points to Britain's proposed Respect Orders, restrictions on speech, and the treatment of traditional Christians as evidence of an increasingly authoritarian political establishment. Drawing on Joseph de Maistre, he traces contemporary political problems to revolutionary ideas that sought to replace Christian civilization with secular utopianism.
The growing use of state power against dissent reveals weakness rather than strength. Liberalism cannot win the argument, so it silences the opposition. Frank urges Catholics to resist despair, defend the teachings of Christ, and remain steadfast in their faith. The state is tightening its grip. The Church is the obstacle. And the question is whether Catholics will stand firm, or be silenced by a system that fears the truth. The answer will determine the future of religious freedom in the West.
