Saint Potamon of Heraclea was one of the great confessors and martyrs of the early Church. As Bishop in Egypt, he courageously endured persecution under the pagan emperor Maximinus Daia and later suffered again under the Arian heretics during the reign of Constantius.

According to Saint Athanasius, Saint Potamon was “doubly a martyr” — first under the heathens and then under the Arians. During the brutal persecutions of 310 AD, one of his eyes was bored out and his body cruelly mutilated for confessing the Catholic Faith. His visible wounds made him a striking figure at the Council of Nicaea in 325, where he fiercely defended the divinity of Jesus Christ against the Arian heresy.

Saint Potamon later stood beside Saint Athanasius at the Council of Tyre and continued defending Orthodoxy even as Arians spread throughout the empire. For his unwavering zeal, he was beaten nearly to death by agents of the Arian persecutors and died shortly afterward in 341 AD as a martyr for the Divinity of the Son of God.
