Pope Leo XIV has appointed Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle as dean of the College of Cardinals, a position that places him at the center of preparations for a future papal election. Tagle is known for his support of LGBT inclusion, including the 2017 Lazarus Project and remarks at the 2015 Synod on the Family calling for the Church to adapt its approach to homosexual and divorced-and-remarried Catholics. The appointment signals the direction of Vatican leadership under Leo XIV, and raises concerns for Catholics who believe the Church should uphold traditional moral teaching.

Meanwhile, Cardinal Gerhard Müller has joined Cardinal Raymond Burke in challenging a Vatican doctrinal note restricting the use of the title Co-Redemptrix for the Blessed Virgin Mary. Müller argues the title expresses "a truth objectively contained within revelation" and should not be silenced because of Protestant objections. The defense of Marian theology continues, despite Vatican resistance.

The SSPX controversy may have backfired. The Society reports that several priests from diocesan backgrounds in multiple countries have joined its ranks following the excommunication controversy. The punishment intended to isolate the SSPX has strengthened it. From the dean of the College of Cardinals to the defense of Mary's title, the Church faces competing visions of doctrine, pastoral practice, and authority. The question is which vision will prevail.
