On the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, Fr. George Perricone reflects on the Cross as the Catholic’s crown, glory, light, courage, buckler, and shield.

He begins with the great Catholic victory associated with Don John of Austria and the Battle of Lepanto, recalling the image of the crucifix raised before the Christian fleet as a sign of confidence in Christ.

But the power of the Cross is not merely something from history.

The Blood shed on Calvary is made sacramentally present at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Through Christ’s sacrifice, our sins are washed away in Confession, demons are put to flight, and Christians receive strength to endure the darkness of this “valley of tears.”

Fr. Perricone then reflects on the recent killing of Charlie Kirk, describing the sorrow and darkness surrounding his death and calling Catholics back to the one source of hope that no earthly evil can overcome:

the Cross of Jesus Christ.

When darkness seems overwhelming, take up the crucifix. Kiss the Five Wounds. Make the Sign of the Cross. Kneel when the Cross passes before you.

And like the Christians who came before us:

Lift high the Cross.

Christ will conquer.
