On the Feast of the Seven Sorrows—or Seven Dolors—of the Blessed Virgin Mary, this Catholic sermon reflects on the words Jesus spoke from the Cross: “Woman, behold thy son” and “Behold thy mother.”
Why did Christ address the Blessed Virgin as “woman” rather than “mother”? The sermon explores Mary as the New Eve and considers a moving meditation from Blessed Baptist of Mantua: perhaps Christ withheld the cherished title of “mother” to spare her already wounded heart an even greater sorrow.
At Calvary, Our Lady entered an ocean of suffering as she stood faithfully beneath the Cross and united her maternal heart with the sacrifice of her divine Son. Through Christ’s words to the beloved disciple, Mary was given not only to St. John but to every Christian willing to receive her maternal care.
Drawing upon reflections attributed to St. John Chrysostom and St. Augustine, the sermon contemplates the profound bond formed between Mary and the beloved disciple. These two virginal hearts stood together in silence, weeping as they watched Christ gradually surrender His life. The sword of sorrow pierced the heart of the Mother and the heart of the disciple.
This mystery extends beyond the three hours of Calvary. Throughout our lives, Christians are called to remain united with the Blessed Mother in the Mystical Body of Christ, sharing the Church’s sufferings while trusting in Mary’s motherly protection.
Let us obey the command of Jesus Christ and welcome His Mother into our hearts and homes:
“Behold thy mother.”
🙏 Our Lady of Sorrows, pray for us.
✝️ Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us.
