St Benedict of Nursia, commemorated on March 14, is known as the Founder of Western Monasticism and one of the most influential saints in Christian history.

Born in 480 in Nursia, Italy, Benedict was sent to Rome to study at a young age. Disturbed by the immorality he witnessed in the city, he abandoned worldly ambitions and sought a life dedicated entirely to God.

He eventually withdrew to a remote cave at Subiaco, where he lived as a hermit for three years under the guidance of the monk Romanus. Through prayer, fasting, and spiritual struggle, Benedict overcame intense temptations and grew in holiness.

Disciples soon gathered around him seeking spiritual direction. Benedict organized them into twelve monastic communities, each with twelve monks. Later he founded the famous Monastery of Monte Cassino, which became a great center of Christian learning and monastic life.

St Benedict authored the Rule of St Benedict, a guide for monastic life emphasizing:

Prayer

Work

Obedience

Humility

Stability

This rule shaped Western monasticism for centuries and helped preserve Christian culture through the copying of manuscripts and teaching of younger monks.

Gifted with foresight and miracles, St Benedict served God faithfully until he foretold his own death in 547.

His life was recorded by St Gregory the Great in the Dialogues, and his legacy continues to influence the Church to this day.
